Events and Meetings

The Group meets on a Friday evening at 7.30 pm and meetings are held once a fortnight ( normally the 2nd and 4th Fridays )
in the period from September to April; the last meeting of the programme being the AGM which is held at the end of April annually.The meetings are held in Snape Village Institute.

Some meetings are based on a discussion with a group member leading on a specific subject, others are where we invite in a Guest Speaker. Meetings between the AGM and Annual Exhibition ( August Bank Holiday Monday) are for members to consider and prepare material for the Exhibition. 

Admission is £2.50 for non members, who are welcome at all speaker and general discussion evenings 




14 Sept: OUTING TO DALES COUNTRYSIDE MUSEUM at HAWES – meet at the museum at 2.30pm. 

Use own transport - please offer lifts to other members..

28 Sept: NO GROUP MEETING - there is a talk that evening as a fund raiser for the Institute by Chris Brown about his 

adventures cycling around New Zealand. Contact Sarah Lowe on 01677470444 for tickets.              

12 Oct: CHARLES DICKENS - his life, works and links to Yorkshire Schools. 

Illustrated talk by Isobel Stirk.

26 Oct: WHITBY JET - the history, uses and some examples to handle. If you have any Jet items please bring them along

and you can have them appraised by the guest speaker Carol Cook.

9  Nov: DAVID'S CURIOSITIES - Items of interest displayed and commented on by an SLHG member Dr David Severs.                                              

23 Nov: CAKES AND CREATIVITY, LIFE IN A RURAL RECTORY - based on a collection of hand written magazines 

discovered in the attic of Thirsk Museum.                                

7 Dec: TUDOR DRESS AND FOOD -Jane Sammells will be dressed in authentic Tudor clothing made by Rebecca 

Atkinson and they will bring along food made from recipes of the time..


13 Jan: OUR NEW YEAR SUNDAY LUNCH – venue to be decided.             


25 Jan: SIR THOMAS ROBINSON (1702- 77) Architect, Connoisseur and Scallywag!

22 Feb: MEMBER'S EVENING – to discuss plans and items for this years exhibition   

8  March: ARMSTRONG'S ALTERNATE ALPHABET - illustrated talk by Richard Barber showing a large number  of old

photographs of our industrial past. Many railway scenes plus all manner of other photographs of businesses and

employment of yesteryear  

22 March:: DISCUSSION EVENING  - 'Hares of Snape' led by Sarah Lowe.

5 April WALKING WITH WILKINSON - in the footsteps of my grandfather on the Western Front, April 1918 - Illustrated

talk by Graham Seel based on a diary kept by his grandfather at the time.                                             

26  April: A.G.M. An ideal opportunity to make suggestions and help to plan future activities. The meeting will be followed  by 

followed by finger buffet supper - please bring a small plate of food to share.
